‘Childcare is a Priority’: Governor Moore Visits School in Chevy Chase

Governor Wes Moore visited Wonders Early Learning Center at Leland in Chevy Chase Friday morning taking part in a roundtable discussion with parents and educators. Moore talked about his administration’s historic investment in education and he said Maryland has jumped 20 states in reading levels.

Moore told the assembled group “You all are here to lead the charge.” He added, “When children are okay, society can thrive.”

“Childcare is a priority because it’s not just an educational priority, it’s an economic priority,” the Governor told MCM.

“This is both about making sure our children are getting what they need and making sure that they’re getting the brain development that they need because we know that so much of brain development happens in a child before they’re even five years old but also it’s about the economy. It’s about how can we get people back into the workforce because parents shouldn’t have to choose between are my children going to be okay or will I be able to go back to work and I think that part of the reason you’re seeing this historic drop in unemployment that we’re having in the state of Maryland where Maryland’s going now on 14 straight months of the lowest unemployment rates in the entire country I think a big part of that have been the historic investments that we have made with childcare within the state of Maryland.”

The visit concluded with Moore reading “Jabari Jumps” – about a child overcoming his fear of jumping off a diving board – to a classroom of 4 and 5-year olds.
