Multiple Restaurants Closed Monday for ‘A Day Without Immigrants’

Numerous businesses across the U.S. – including Montgomery County – are shutting their doors Monday for “A Day Without Immigrants,” a nationwide initiative aimed at demonstrating the vital role immigrants play in the U.S. economy and protesting recent anti-immigrant policies by the Trump administration.

Workers will stay home and consumers are urged not to shop.

Several restaurants in Montgomery County are participating including El Gavilan in Silver Spring.

According to the MoCoShow, these restaurants will also be closed:

  • Centrado Café Shop (Burtonsville)
  • Costa Grande Restaurant (Rockville)
  • El Golfo (Silver Spring)
  • El Viejo Central American Kitchen (Silver Spring)
  • La Casita Pupusería, (Gaithersburg and Silver Spring)
  • La Frontera (Gaithersburg)
  • La Villa Restaurant (Gaithersburg)
  • Los Chorros (Wheaton)
  • Luchador Bar & Eats (Burtonsville)
  • Megamart (Gaithersburg and Takoma Park)
  • Rio Grande Bar & Grill (Germantown)
  • Samantha’s Restaurant (Silver Spring)
  • Tacos El Pariente,(Gaithersburg, Germantown and Olney)

In February 2017, there was A Day Without Immigrants in response to immigration policies enacted during Trump’s first term.

“Taking a day off, it’s hard for many of our small businesses,” County Council President Kate Stewart said during a media briefing Monday. “And I would encourage residents later in the week to make sure to support our businesses, because they are taking a stand today to support all the members of our community, particularly our immigrant community that has been so hard hit by the executive orders coming out of The White House.”
