Damascus, Clarksburg and Seneca Valley Win County Poms Competitions

Cheers, soaring kicks and intense competition filled the gym as Damascus, Clarksburg and Seneca Valley high schools claimed victory at the 28th annual Poms County Competition, held Feb. 1 at Montgomery Blair High School.

In Division I, Damascus High School clinched first place, earning its fourth county championship, since the 2015-16 season. Head coach Brianna Nelson credited the team’s hard work and perseverance.

“Honestly, it feels a little bit surreal. The last time that Damascus got first at the county championship was when one of my co-coaches and I were on the team together my senior year (back in 2016). There are so many talented teams in Division I, so it truly is a testament to how hard these girls have worked all season,” Nelson said.

Damascus High School Principal Bradley W. Rohner praised the team’s achievement.

“I was thrilled to celebrate our Poms’ incredible victory at the county competition,” Rohner said. “It was wonderful to see their hard work, dedication and school spirit recognized with winning first place. Their performance’s energy, excitement and sheer perfection were a testament to the countless hours of effort they put in.”

In Division II, Clarksburg High School captured the top spot after finishing second last year, earning its second Division II title since the 2006-07 season.

“We are incredibly proud of the team for their hard work, dedication and perseverance this season! This milestone is a reflection of our commitment to excellence and building a program that will make the Clarksburg community proud!” said Shaneil Turnbull, head coach at Clarksburg High School.

In Division III, Seneca Valley High School successfully defended its title, continuing its winning streak after last year’s victory.

“They already know they are my extended children. I love them with every ounce of my being. I know they can do whatever they set their mind to. I believe in them more than anything,” said head coach Jasmine L. Jones.
