Following Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s State of the State address Wednesday, Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller also spoke about the looming budget deficit and the new federal administration.
“We have a new administration in The White House that quite frankly is undermining the values that we as Marylanders so dearly believe in,” Miller said during County Executive Marc Elrich’s media briefing Wednesday, “and the series of executive orders issued by the new administration have caused a lot of chaos.”
“All of us recognize we are facing challenging times, both with the Maryland state budget deficit and the chaotic changes being proposed by the administration at the national level,” Miller said. The state will work with partners at the federal, state, and local levels, as well as with private industry partners and “all the communities in the state of Maryland.”
The state faces a looming $3 million budget deficit.
During his speech, Moore said he would increase taxes on the wealthy while decreasing it slightly for the middle class. He aims to cut taxes for about two-thirds of residents while increasing it for the others, who are “exceptionally well off,” including himself.
