U.S. Rep. April McClain Delaney (D-6) joined other members of the national Democratic Women’s Caucus to condemn what they call the chaos of the Trump Administration and explain how they are fighting back.
Each of the eight speakers detailed how women in their district as well as throughout the world are being hurt and are scared that they and their children will lose out due to cuts in federal funding.
McClain Delaney detailed the number of federal medical research institutions in Maryland and cited how important they are to the health of women throughout the state and the world at large.
“We stand up in the face of the unconstitutional, mean-spirited and corrosive attack on our government agencies and experienced work force,” she said during the Friday morning press conference.
Institutions like NIST – the National Institute of Standards and Technology – and the NIH – National Institutes of Health -“have saved millions of lives,” McClain Delaney said, adding, “Research saves lives.”
She also declared, “I believe in investing in health and security is what our government is supposed to do.”
The Democratic Women’s Caucus say they have demanded meetings with the Trump Administration and tried to subpoena records to no avail.
Caucus Vice President Hillary Scholten of Michigan said without federal funding, programs like Head Start, Medicaid and access to childcare could be eliminated.
“Republicans in Congress are doing nothing to stop this,” she said.
If the Trump Administration is focused on cutting waste and abuse, this is not the way to go about it, declared Rep. Shontel Brown of Ohio.
“That’s not the plan,” she said. Instead, they are cutting programs they do not like. “This is a power grab.”
Other speakers included Reps. Lois Frankel of Florida, Nikema Williams of Georgia, Deborah Ross of North Carolina, Jill Tokuda of Hawaii and Judy Chu of California.
