Councilmember Fani-González ‘Excited’ to See Super Bowl Ad Featuring Girls’ Flag Football

Many people tune into the Super Bowl to check out the commercials. Still, Montgomery County Councilmember Natali Fani-González was taken aback while watching one for girls’ flag football Sunday night.

It didn’t take her long to post on social media, “Loved the girl flag football ad. If you are in middle school, sign up for the spring flag football league.” She even included the county recreation’s site for sign-ups.

Fani-González’s daughter in middle school joined the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) sports program during the previous school year, when it debuted.

“My daughter plays flag football. I am hoping to get more girls involved,” she said, adding, “It’s an amazing program so when I saw the commercial, I got excited.”

As soon as it kicked off during the Spring of 2024, “It was a hit,” she said. The second season begins in May.

Fani-González was particularly excited that the “vast majority” of middle school girls who signed up had never played before.

The two-minute National Football League commercial featured a super macho boy saying, “Girls don’t play football.”

The girl, who ends up running faster than the high school jock, replied, “They do where I’m from.”

The girl then goes on to catch a football one-handed and land a backwards leap over a player a la Philadelphia Eagles running back now Super Bowl champion Saquon Barkley.
