The Montgomery County Sports Advisory Committee invites nominations for its first Unsung Sports Hero Award, recognizing those who expand sports opportunities for underserved communities.
“Sports bring communities together. Behind every great team or event, dedicated individuals work tirelessly,” Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said. “The award honors those who give their time, energy, and passion to make local sports possible—whether they’re coaches, volunteers, referees, or organizers.”
Nominees can include coaches, officials, team managers, field maintenance workers, transportation providers, trainers, and equipment donors. The award highlights those who promote equitable sports participation in Montgomery County.
“Youth and community sports thrive because of individuals who dedicate their time, often without pay or recognition,” Sports Advisory Committee Chair Tom Cove said. “The award credits these special people, without whom many kids could not play.”
Nominations run through Friday, Feb. 28. Winners will be honored at the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Sunday, May 4. To nominate or learn more, visit the Montgomery County Sports Advisory Committee website.
The Sports Advisory Committee evaluates sports participation and advises the County Executive and County Council.
