Council Celebrates ‘Divine Nine’ African American Fraternities and Sororities

County Councilmembers celebrated the county’s “Divine Nine” African American fraternities and sororities Tuesday.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, known as the Divine Nine, has chapters in Montgomery County. The nine sororities and fraternities involved “have been at the forefront of improving and perfecting this country, this state, this county, since the very beginning,” County Councilmember Will Jawando said at the council building in Rockville.

“We want to ensure that the hard work and the legacy of these incredible leaders, these men and women, isn’t forgotten but celebrated,” County Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles said.

“You wouldn’t have Martin Luther King [Jr.] Day activities if the folks in this room didn’t organize that stuff every year. You wouldn’t have thousands and thousands of people being fed, and thousands of kids getting scholarships to schools,” Jawando said. He noted that most fraternities and sororities stop after college, but the Divine Nine organizations have people joining as adults.
