FareShare Program to Provide Commuters with Financial Assistance

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will be providing up to $325 per month to workers in need of financial assistance for their public transit commutes through a program called FareShare.

According to a MCDOT press release, the program will look to cover expenses from public transportation options such as Ride On, Metrobus or Metrorail. To receive the money, employers must contribute $25 per month per employee receiving the benefit. This money is tax-free to both the employer and the employee.

The program is open to everybody in Montgomery County and MCDOT Commuter Services will visit any employer, free of charge, to set up the program. Employers who participate would be eligible for a state tax credit. Further information on tax credits can be viewed at Commuter Choice Maryland.

Starting in January 2025, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) increased the pre-tax limit for employer-provided commuting benefits to $325 per month, up from $315 per month in 2024.  FareShare reimburses employers for the maximum amount allowed, minus the $25 contribution.
