County Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles launched her 2026 re-election campaign on Monday.

“As we face unprecedented challenges, our diversity, equity, and inclusion values remain threatened,” Sayles stated in a release. “Families are struggling with job loss and limited access to essential healthcare. Our community is grappling with economic hardship and mental health concerns. That’s why we need experienced, compassionate leaders who protect our democracy, fight for our residents, and safeguard our community’s resources.”

Currently in her first term, Sayles was one of six women elected to the county council in 2022, creating a historic female majority. She was previously on the Gaithersburg City Council.

According to the campaign release, she was the first African American elected to the Gaithersburg City Council and the first Black woman elected countywide.

Sayles came to MCM’s studios in 2023 when she was running for Congress for the seat currently held by Rep. April McClain Delaney.

Sayles has established a Youth Advisory Council. MCM attended a community meeting Sayles hosted last summer to discuss topics including safety and youth engagement.

Her first council bill as the lone lead sponsor was approved last year. The legislation is designed to prevent housing discrimination against people with certain minor criminal histories.

The campaign announcement stated a launch fundraiser will be held Saturday hosted by Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin and special guest Dr. Charlene Dukes.
