Just like using a soda or snack machine, a student inserts the coin, types in the number of a book and then – plunk – a brand-new book is the students to keep.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority purchased the book vending machine for the William Tyler Page Elementary School, with the support of a grant from the Black Physicians Health Network.
Students named their new vending machine, which offers 600 books, the Page Penguin Literacy Lair and created its slogan, “Where every book is a cool new adventure.”
According to Principal Stacey Brown, it helps create a lifelong love of reading as well as better behavior in school.
