An MCM 2015 Memory: Residents Flock to Glimpse Pope Francis

Yesterday County Executive Marc Elrich posted a statement about the passing of Pope Francis this weekend. He praised the pontiff’s impact on the world, “No matter one’s faith, or lack of it, Pope Francis will be remembered as one of the great humanitarians of our time.”

When the Pope visited Washington in the fall of 2015, county residents were eager to see him in person. Here’s what MCM reported on that historic day.

During his visit to Washington the Pope visited the White House, celebrated an outdoor Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and became the first Pope to address a joint session of Congress. Many local residents have fond memories of his brief time in the nation’s capital.
