Pete Piringer, a spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, tweeted that a 16-inch pipe burst at 7:30 a.m., causing flooding at Edson Lane. WSSC since shut off the water, Piringer tweeted, but the damage to the road is significant.
The northbound lanes on Rockville Pike remain open, but the southbound lanes, between Security Lane and Edson Lane, are closed for utility repairs. Police are directing traffic.

Piringer tweeted at 11:30 a.m. that engineers from Maryland State Highway Administration were evaluating the road damage. According to Piringer, WSSC Water said they may finish water repairs by Friday night. Once the water damage is repaired, road repairs would follow, Piringer said.
The cause of the pipe burst is unknown. It’s unclear when the roadway will reopen.
