Today is Tuesday, Feb. 2. On this day in 1862, slavery was abolished in Washington D.C.; on this day in 1914, Ernest Just, one of the first Black scientists to receive international recognition for his work, won the Spingarn Medal; and on this day in 1948, former President Harry S Truman urged Congress to adopt a Civil Rights program.
Happy Black History Month! Here are five things to know in Montgomery County.
1. Winter Weather Advisory: Montgomery County is under a winter weather advisory today, as well as a hypothermia alert because of the snowy weather. Be safe on the roads and look out for weather-related cancelations.
2. Council in Virtual Session: The Montgomery County Council meets virtually at 9 a.m. Here’s a look at the agenda for the meeting, which includes honoring the life of the late Blanca Kling, former Montgomery County Police Department spokesperson and Hispanic Liason, who died of COVID-19 last week. The meeting will be televised on County Cable Montgomery Channels Comcast HD 996 and SD6, RCN HD 1056 and SD 6, and Verizon 30. Additionally, it will be live-streamed on the council’s Facebook and Youtube channel
3. COVID-19 Testing: Free COVID-19 testing is available throughout the county at seven testing sites today. The schedule of clinics may be found here.
4. School Board Meets: Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education’s Fiscal Management Committee meets virtually at 10 a.m. Here’s a look at the agenda.

5. Black History Month Virtual Events: From 2 to 3 p.m., Montgomery County Public Libraries is hosting a virtual Black History Month presentation in partnership with Montgomery County Historical Society. Researcher Sarah Hedlund will examine three documented cases of lynching in Montgomery County: George Peck, John Diggs-Dorsey, and Sidney Randolph. Register for the event by clicking here.
