State Will Start Allotting Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Doses This Week

Now that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approved the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, Gov. Larry Hogan announced that Maryland will start to deploy allotments of the shot this week.

According to a press release from Gov. Hogan’s office, the state has been initially allocated 49,600 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, 100% of which will be allotted to providers within the next couple of days. Health officials have not yet said how many doses from the initial allotment will be coming to Montgomery County.

“The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is safe, effective, and made right here in Maryland,” said Gov. Hogan. “Our plan is to get this vaccine into the community right away and right into arms so that we can continue increasing our vaccination rate.”

This makes the third COVID-19 vaccine granted emergency use authorization by the FDA – the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are the other two. Johnson and Johnson developed the first single-shot vaccine approved in U.S.

 

Meanwhile, Montgomery County leaders say they anticipate more vaccine doses to meet the high demand.

“As soon as the supply shows up, it’s going to be in the arms of our county residents,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich during his weekly COIVD-19 virtual media briefing on Wednesday.

State health officials will direct the Johnson & Johnson vaccine allocation widely to mass vaccination sites, hospitals, local health departments, and community health centers. According to state leaders, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine will also be deployed to pharmacies that the federal government has selected to participate in its retail pharmacy partnership.

The Montgomery County Vaccine Distribution Dashboard shows that as of March 1, more than 151,000 residents have received their first dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. About 75,000 residents are fully vaccinated so far.

Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Clinics are currently vaccinating Priority Group 1A (all tiers) and 1B (Tier 1: ages 75 and up). Preregistration is open for Priority Groups 1A,1B, and 1C. Click here to preregister.
