Today is Friday, July 16, and here are five things to know in Montgomery County:
1. Council Meets with U.S. Senator Cardin: On Friday, July 16 at 10:30 a.m., the Council will meet virtually with U.S. Senator Ben Cardin. The meeting will be broadcast on County Cable Montgomery (Channels 6 and 996 on Comcast/RCN and Channel 30 on Verizon) and live streamed on the Council’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

2. County Board of Appeals Deadline: The deadline to submit an application for the board is today by 5 p.m.
3. Red Line Single Tracking: Metro work on the Red Line to upgrade the underground tunnel ventilation system and repair platform canopies begins Saturday. The work will require single tracking between Dupont Circle and Van Ness stations from July 17 through August 29. Metro expects this work “to cause significant impacts for customers.”

4. Latino Conservation Week: There are three events this weekend in Montgomery County that are part of the national celebration:
- DÍA DE LA COMUNIDAD Y LA CONSERVACIÓN: Latino Conservation Week Park and Neighborhood Clean Up takes place Saturday from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Broadacres Local Park in Silver Spring. Register here (walk-ups welcome)
- ¡SI SE PUEDE! Nature Walk and Family Activities Saturday from 9 – 11:30 a.m. at Long Branch Pool in Silver Spring. Registration open for Long Branch Residents.
- STORYWALK®: ¡Olinguito, de la Aa la Zz! at Wheaton Local Park. Families are invited to read ¡Olinguito, de la Aa la Zz! on posted signs while strolling through the park. The book, written by LuLu Delacre, explores a cloud forest in the Andes of Ecuador. The self-guided exploration will be available from Saturday, July 17 through Sunday, Aug. 15.

5. Cat Adoptions: Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) in Derwood is waiving the fees for all its cats and kittens from now through July 31.
