Local leaders have been informed that Montgomery County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles will be resigning effective Sept. 12.
“I believe Dr. Gayles is going to go down as one of the most important people in our county’s history. It was his recommendations and consistent guidance on the best health practice that actually enabled us to be one of the safest, largest jurisdictions in the country in combating COVID,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich.
During his weekly virtual media briefing on Wednesday, Elrich mentioned how he felt about working with Dr. Gayles. (Because of technical difficulties, Elrich spoke by phone for part of the briefing.)
In a statement, Elrich said Montgomery County Health Department’s Dr. Raymond Crowel would immediately begin working with the Maryland Department of Health on filling this critical position.
“We’re not going to accept the new Health Officer from the state who’s not going to lead from what the science and data show… and if I could clone Dr. Gayles, I would. Whoever we are going to get is going to be somebody who can demonstrate the same kind of leadership and courage that Dr. Gayles was able to demonstrate,” added Elrich during the virtual briefing.
