During a memorial service for Tommy Raskin, who died of suicide on Dec. 31, 2020, family members announced they were setting aside a Kindness Day in his memory.
Sunday would have been his 27th birthday, and people across the country donated money and volunteered at charities to honor the son of U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin in the first annual Kindness Day.
The Tommy Raskin Memorial Fund for People and Animals, which was established through the Greater Washington Community Foundation, distributes money to charities Tommy Raskin cared about, including Oxfam, Give Directly, the Helen Keller Institute and Animal Outlook.
Locally, people participated and then shared their act of kindness on social media using the hashtag #Today for Tommy. Some worked at food pantries, others donated to animal causes and still others donated blood.
