Montgomery County-run clinics now offer COVID-19 booster shots for 5 to 11-year-olds.
Last week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized a Pfizer booster dose for 5 to 11-year-olds at least five months after they complete their primary vaccine series. County clinics began offering the additional dose for the age group last Friday, according to the county’s COVID-19 information portal.
Children in that age group moderately or severely immunocompromised can receive their booster three months after receiving their second dose, said Sean O’Donnell, Public Health Emergency Preparedness Manager with County Health and Human Services, during a media briefing Monday.
He estimated about 9,000 children in the county are at the five-month eligibility mark.
“Check your vaccination records if you’re a parent and see if your child qualifies for the boosters,” O’Donnell said. Residents can make an appointment with a county clinic online.
“The scientific data is showing all ages have that waning immunity from the previous vaccinations,” he said.
Vaccines are also available through private practices and pharmacies.
