A rising fourth grade student from Viers Mill Elementary School passed away over the Fourth of July weekend, Principal Matthew Hawkins informed the school community in a letter. Hawkins identified the student as Darlie Fajardo. No cause of death was given.
“Darlie was a wonderful and kind young person who actively engaged in school learning experiences and extracurricular activities. This news is heartbreaking and difficult for all of us to accept,” Hawkins wrote. “Our thoughts and most heartfelt sympathy are with Darlie’s family and friends.”
As the school community grieves, Hawkins said counselors would be available at the school to support students.
“She was a happy, vibrant, energetic, exuberant, and loving young girl who loved singing, dancing, and running around everywhere,” Fajardo’s family said on a GoFundMe page created to cover her funeral expenses. “Her energy and beautiful smile could bring instant joy to anyone, no matter their situation.”
Following the economic struggles brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the family said any amount is appreciated as they work to get back on their feet financially.
The GoFundMe page has a goal of $12,500. As Friday afternoon, the online fundraiser had amassed more than $11,800. Leftover money will be donated to the Animal Humane Society as Darlie was a massive lover of animals, her family said.
