Montgomery Parks—which is a part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission—issued a press release about their annual 2022-2023 deer population management program.
The program will occur from Sept. 2022 to Mar. 2023 with the purpose of addressing the “over-population of deer in many areas of the county which result in deer-automobile collisions, excessive damage to the environment, private landscapes and agriculture, and the spread of disease.” Routine maintenance will take place to ensure there is a balance between human land use/residencies and deer habitats.
Three new park units have been added to the current list of 60: Washington Grove Conservation Park, Piedmont Crossing Local Park, and Rock Creek Stream Valley Park.
At the Washington Grove Conservation Park and Piedmont Crossing Local Park, archery-managed hunting will take place, in addition to an expansion of community-led efforts related to the issue. At the Rock Creek Stream Valley Park, Park-Police sharpshooting operations will be present.
