Starting Friday, new rules will be into effect at Montgomery County high school athletic competitions after a “large altercation” at the Northwest-Gaithersburg football game last week, per the school district.
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) temporarily suspended football operations at Gaithersburg and Northwest high schools after an altercation between both teams last Friday.
As a result, everyone school-aged not from the two participating schools in a game needs an adult chaperone, school officials announced during a media briefing Wednesday. Students from the two participating schools must bring a student ID or student schedule. These will be checked at the gate and attendees should expect to take more time getting into games.
There will be no re-entry at games and no spectators will be allowed in after halftime. Backpacks are not allowed and gatherings will be minimized.
MCPS Chief Operating Officer Brian Hull said the measures will be in place starting Friday through the rest of the football season and potentially beyond.
These are measures under Tier 1 in a three-tier system. Dr. Jeff Sullivan, MCPS Director of Systemwide Athletics, said hopefully, officials will not have to go any further. Tier 2 includes limiting attendance to home students and Tier 3 — “some of the extreme measures we would take if needed” — include closing concession stands and even having no spectators.
“We don’t want to go here,” Sullivan said.
MCPS measures for sports events starting Friday:
