Maryland Launches Online Sports Betting

As of 9 p.m. Wednesday, Marylanders can now participate in mobile sports betting. And it’s just in time to bet on their favorite World Cup soccer teams and Thanksgiving NFL games.

Gov. Larry Hogan announced the launch, noting that seven sportsbooks are involved, none of which are in Montgomery County.

“This process took longer than it should have, but we are excited that this launch is in time for fans to place their bets,” Hogan said during a news conference Tuesday. “In addition to allowing Marylanders to bet on the NFL, March Madness, and so much more, sports betting is helping us keep these critical dollars in the state and is providing another critical revenue source for Maryland schools,” he said.

Hogan said the online betting is expected to bring up to $30 million in revenue next year that will be used for education. Hogan said he expected the popularity to grow, “and that total is expected to reach nearly $100 million by 2027.”

The seven online sports books include Barstool (applied as Penn Sports Interactive), BetMGM, BetRivers (applied as RSI Maryland), Caesars (applied as American Wagering), DraftKings (applied as Crown MD Online Gaming), FanDuel (applied as Betfair) and PointsBet.
