Takoma Park Police has increased its presence in the area of Roanoke Avenue, where residents have reported hearing shots fired.
Residents also reported hearing shots fired in the area of Opal Daniels Park along Maple and Maplewood avenues.
There were no victims or injuries in any of the incidents.
Police Chief Antonio DeVaul noted that casings were found in the Roanoke Avenue area, but not in the Opal Daniels Park area. He does not believe incidents at the two locations are related.
“We take all these incidents very seriously,” DeVaul said, adding that the reports of shots being fired “is not unfamiliar.”
Officers will pay “special attention” to those areas, he said. However, he said, “We believe there was no targeted victim” and the incidents were “just some horseplaying.”
On Nov. 29, residents reported hearing shots fired behind a residence in the 8300 block of Roanoke Avenue at about 9:35 p.m. Officers checked the area for suspects, victims and casings. They recovered several 9 mm shell casings.
On Dec. 1 at 2 a.m., police responded to the area of Roanoke and Hudson avenues for reports of shots being fired. One caller saw three men running towards the 8300 block of Roanoke Avenue. One 9mm casing was found at the rear of 8304 Roanoke Avenue. It was believed to have been fired in the earlier incident.
Officers canvased Toatley-Fraser Park on Eastridge Avenue and discovered several 9mm shell casings under the gazebo. The picnic tables had also been vandalized.
On Dec. 2, several shots were reported fired behind a residence in the 8300 block of Roanoke Avenue at about 9:35 p.m. Police recovered several 9mm shell casings.
On Dec. 3 at 5 a.m., an officer patrolling the area of Maple and Maplewood avenues heard what was believed to be shots being fire. Police dispatchers received several calls from residents who said they heard shots fired in the areas of Sheridan Avenue, Maple at Lincoln and Lincoln at Jefferson.
Officers did not find suspects, victims or casings.
