Abraham Douglas, of Silver Spring, was found guilty of murdering Ahmadou Bamba Gueye, 23, of Takoma Park following a four-day trial.
Douglas, 21, will be sentenced Jan. 27. He could be sentenced to life in prison.
On Wednesday, a jury found Douglas guilty of first-degree murder, use of a handgun in the commission of a felony and third-degree burglary.
Douglas was charged with burglarizing a residence in the 600 block of Kennebec Avenue on April 22 after he shot Gueye. During Douglas’s arrest, Takoma Park Police officers recovered a handgun, a 50-round drum magazine and red tip bullets.
He was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to his lower extremity.
According to the State’s Attorney’s Office for Montgomery County, the incident took place in broad daylight in the parking lot of the Park Richie Apartments.
Douglas can be seen on surveillance video exciting the passenger of a vehicle, walking to a group of people and then starting to run. He was wearing a ski mask when he targeted Gueye, shooting him in the back at close range, according to State’s Attorney’s Office.
The bullet passed through Gueye’s body and then struck a vehicle. Douglas also accidently shot himself in the leg while fleeing. He then broke into a nearby apartment where Takoma Police officers found him.
“We express our deepest condolences to the family of Ahmadou Bamba Gueye. This senseless violence has no place in our community and thanks to the work of the responding officers and detectives on this case along with outstanding prosecution by Assistant State’s Attorneys Marybeth Ayres and Lauren Turner, the defendant will be held accountable,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.
