A concept plan for the new South Silver Spring Park includes amenities like a dog run, bocce court, stage, playgrounds and games.
Montgomery Parks unveiled the plan for the park at 1110 East-West Highway in Silver Spring, at the site of the former National Tire and Battery. Per a release, the plan was developed based on recommendations in the Silver Spring Downtown and Adjacent Communities Plan and community feedback through an open house and online surveys.
Other amenities in the plan include a promenade, picnic area, multi-purpose lawn, fitness area, multi-sports court, nature play areas and games including ping pong and corn hole.
Montgomery Parks staff are refining the concept plan and anticipate demolishing the current building on-site this spring. The park is expected to be complete in summer 2023.
Street trees, shade and flowering trees, bioretention areas and landscape beds for pollinator-friendly plants will be planted, according to Montgomery Parks.
“We are excited to be creating a first-class urban park in the heart of downtown Silver Spring, where nearby residents can gather with their friends and families to enjoy a variety of activities and amenities,” said Montgomery Parks Director Mike Riley in the statement. “We recognize the important role this park will play for this community, and we are moving swiftly to get it built and open to the public.”
