A wind chill advisory goes into effect on Friday, Dec. 23 at 4 p.m. The county alert advises residents that high winds and low temperatures could combine to produce hypothermia and frostbite on exposed skin during those hours.
The wind chill advisory ends at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24. Try to avoid spending prolonged time outdoors until the advisory expires. If you must be outdoors, dress warmly in layers and be sure to cover up as much as possible.
Frigid temperatures as low as single digits will prevail over the holiday weekend.
Residents concerned about the well-being of a homeless individual can call the County’s Homeless Outreach 24-hour Line at 240-907-2688. Outreach partners will attempt to locate the individual and offer resources and support.
County facilities such as the libraries and recreation centers are open during business hours for anyone needing relief from the cold. Community recreation centers will close at 3 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday. Public shopping centers are also available as warm locations during their hours of operation.
