Montgomery County continues to shelter migrants bused to Washington, D.C. from states including Texas.
On Christmas Eve, three buses of migrants arrived in D.C., The Washington Post reported. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began transporting migrants last year to send a message to President Joe Biden’s administration.
On Wednesday, County Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Dr. Earl Stoddard said most migrants who come into the county only stay for 3-5 days before going to another destination.
He said the county largely provides a location, where a near-constant number of 50 migrants stay as people arrive and depart. SAMU First Response largely provides personnel and services inside the respite center.
The county is heavily involved in transitioning people who end up staying in the region to their location and to nonprofits that support that location, like CASA. Stoddard said 85-90% of migrants taken in travel to further destinations.
