After news broke last week that owner Dan Snyder may be close to selling the Washington Commanders, a Virginia brewery celebrated by launching a new beer called “Bye Dan.”
Old Ox Brewery in Ashburn, Va. says the brew’s bitter taste represents Snyder’s unsuccessful and controversial 23-year tenure. The can bears the words, “Tastes like 23 years of bitterness,” and has a picture of a hog wearing the Commander’s burgundy and gold helmet and waving.
“We were overwhelmed and overjoyed by the response to the release of Bye Dan and I think it really speaks to how was thrilled the commander’s fans are at the prospect of new ownership and, and brighter days ahead,” the brewery’s president, Chris Burns, told MyMCM. “Old Ox is just honored to be a very small part of something that is so important to this community.”
The hog featured on the can pays homage to the team’s offensive line in the 1980s, affectionately known as “The Hogs.” Burns says the beer was borne out of a request from 106.7 The Fan’s for a live broadcast.
“They reached out to us to see if we’d be interested in and we said absolutely,” said Burns. “We would love to be a part of a live broadcast. But if we’re going to do it, we have to make a beer because it’s what we do. And we can’t think of a better reason to hoist a celebratory pint of beer than the impending sale of the Commanders.”
The cans went on sale Friday and the first batch—more than 8,000 beers—sold out in one hour and 15 minutes. The brewery says they are working on a second batch that customers will be able to preorder online. The beer also is still available on draft at the brewery.
