Agreement in Place for Commanders’ Sale to Josh Harris-Led Group

The Washington Commanders and a group led by Josh Harris jointly announced Friday that they have reached an agreement for the sale of the team.

Commanders’ co-owners Tanya and Dan Snyder said in statement, “We look forward to the prompt completion of this transaction and to rooting for Josh and the team in the coming years.”

Josh Harris, who grew up in Chevy Chase and owns the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, is the leader of the ownership group which would have close to 20 investors including Mitchell Rales, co-founder of Danaher and founder of Glenstone Museum in Potomac and NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson.

Another investor, Mark Ein, said on Twitter: “Honor of a lifetime to partner with Josh Harris, one of my best lifelong friends from when we first met in kindergarten at Rollingwood Elementary School in Chevy Chase, MD, and another dear friend Mitch Rales to buy our hometown team – the Commanders. Can’t wait to help make the team as beloved throughout our DMV community as it was when i had my best childhood memories going to games with my dad as a little boy.”

The sale price for the Commanders, $6.05 billion, would be an all-time record for an NFL franchise.

The sale awaits approval from NFL owners. That could potentially happen at the next owners meetings which are scheduled for May 22-24 in Minneapolis. 24 of 32 NFL owners would have to approve the sale to make it official.
