Six women are set to join the Montgomery County Council following the general election last week.
On Monday, Council President Gabe Albornoz welcomed the “extraordinary group of women” he said will bring tremendous diversity to the next county council.
Per unofficial election results, newcomers Laurie-Anne Sayles (at-large), Marilyn Balcombe (District 2), Kate Stewart (District 4), Kristin Mink (District 5), Natali Fani-González (District 6) and Dawn Luedtke (District 7) lead their races.
Incumbent Councilmembers Albornoz (at-large), Evan Glass (at-large), Will Jawando (at-large), Andrew Friedson (District 1) and Sidney Katz (District 3) also lead.
During a media briefing Monday, Albornoz said priorities for the new council include housing, economic development and mental health. As chair of the Health and Human Services (HHS) committee, Albornoz said councilmembers will also tackle food insecurity.
