Alsobrooks Pitches Residents of Leisure World

On Saturday evening, Prince George’s County Executive and U.S. Senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks met with residents of Leisure World in Silver Spring. More than 300 potential voters packed the auditorium at Clubhouse B on Leisure World Drive.

Alsobrooks, who is running a tightly contested race against two-time Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, began by telling the crowd, “We are very privileged to live in a country where we have a democracy…in this moment that is what this election really is all about. It is about preserving the values we share as Americans which include democracy and human rights and freedom and integrity and decency. And these are the things that are on the ballot.”

Issues that resonated with her were women’s rights to control their bodies, gun control, the cost of prescription drugs and the stability of the Social Security system.

The self-described daughter of a receptionist and a paper delivery man, she related her early experiences of venturing into Montgomery County with her dad on his overnight runs.

Alsobrooks and her sister were always eager to ride along. She even slept in her clothes so she could answer the 1:30 a.m. call. She recalled some of her favorite stops like Montgomery Donuts, the 7-11 and the Courthouse.

Alsobrooks said her father often tossed the bales of newspapers off the truck telling them, “You know I jump up and down on this dirty truck so you’ll never have to.”

Several audience members well-known to the county were in the audience including Senator Ben Kramer, Board of Education Candidates Shebra Evans and Laura Stewart, among others. Another Board of Education candidate, Brenda Diaz, greeted exiting audience members, handing them campaign material on their way out.

The event was sponsored by the Democratic Club of Leisure World and hosted by Henry Osborne.
