Angela Alsobrooks was sworn into the U.S. Senate Friday afternoon by Vice President Kamala Harris.
She was joined by Sen. Ben Cardin, who she is succeeding, Maryland’s Senior Senator Chris Van Hollen and former Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski.
Alsobrooks, the former Prince George’s executive, is one of two African American senators to serve this session. Delaware’s Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester is the other.
