Postponed: Anti-Hate Task Force Meets Tuesday

Update: The Anti-Hate Task Force meeting scheduled for Tuesday will now take place on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

Original: The Montgomery County Anti-Hate Task Force will meet virtually Tuesday at 7 p.m. Members of the public can register here to attend the meeting virtually via zoom.

In response to a rise in hate and bias incidents, the County Council established the task force in July. It is made up of community and faith leaders representing six groups in the county. They include representatives of the Jewish, Black/African American, LGBTQ+, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Latino/Hispanic and Muslim communities. The groups are working to develop policy recommendations that promote safety and combat hate crimes.

Over the next few months, each of the six groups will present their policy recommendations at a virtual meeting. A final meeting of the task force is scheduled for Nov. 28.

The first policy recommendations were presented during the Aug. 29th meeting by the Jewish community. According to the presentation, there were 109 anti-Semitic incidents reported in Maryland during 2022. Of those incidents, more than 50% occurred in Montgomery County.

Tuesday is the fourth meeting of the full task force and will focus on policy recommendations from the Muslim community. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. and will be conducted virtually via Zoom. The meeting will be available to watch live on YouTube or below.

The public is invited to watch videos of previous meetings and attend a listening session. The next listening session takes place Monday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
