Antonia Hylton Explores ‘Madness,’ Racial Injustice at Gaithersburg Book Festival

New York Time bestselling author Antonia Hylton will discuss her investigative book, “Madness,” on Saturday, May 18, at the Gaithersburg Book Festival (GBF). Hylton is a Peabody and Emmy-award winning journalist at NBC News, reporting on politics and civil rights, and the co-host of the hit podcasts “Southlake” and “Grapevine.”

Her book, “Madness: Race And Insanity In A Jim Crow Asylum,” is a New York Times bestseller that delves into the 93-year history of Crownsville Hospital, one of the last segregated asylums with surviving records and a standing campus in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Hylton blends intimate tales of patients and employees with a decade’s worth of investigative research and archival documents. “Madness” chronicles the stories of Black families whose mental health suffered as they sought, and sometimes failed, to find safety and dignity.

Gaithersburg Mayor and GBF creator Jud Ashman shares a brief review “Madness: Race And Insanity In A Jim Crow Asylum.”

Hylton presents at 4:15 p.m. in the Frederick Douglass Pavilion and will sign books at 5:15 p.m.
