Friday, April 19
Play Day in the Park: Families with young children will explore at their own pace in and around the Black Hill Discover Center Friday from 11 a.m.-noon. Nature play prompts will remain out for the duration of the program. All ages are welcome but prompts and materials are geared towards children aged one to three. Free. Registration is required. Glow in the Park: The event at the Adventure Park in Sandy Spring features a night of climbing and ziplining under the neon-colored lights while listening to music throughout the park Friday from 6 to 11 p.m. with the last start time of 8:20 p.m. The park includes 16 courses made up of bridges, ziplines, ladders, rolling elements and unique climbing challenges. The park is open Fridays through Sundays with varying hours. Admission fee varies. Purchase tickets for Friday’s Glow in the Park here. The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring Friends School is located at 16701 Norwood Road in Sandy Spring.
Gabriel Soto Art Exhibition: VisArts solo exhibit by painter Gabriel Soto opened March 22 and continues through May 12 in the 355 POD Space Gallery, which may be viewed from the sidewalk along Route 355. Soto’s work in this exhibit explores hallucinations, magical energies, and vision. Free. Indoor gallery hours are Wednesday-Thursday from noon to 4 p.m., Friday from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. VisArts is located at 155 Gibbs Street, an easy walk from the Rockville Metro station. Long Branch Earth Day: The Long Branch neighborhood of Silver Spring will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 20 from 3-5 p.m. Learn about the local ecosystem, native species, and the role humans play in keeping the Earth healthy. The celebration takes place at the Flower Avenue Urban Park, located at 8746 Flower Avenue. Free, RSVP requested. Learn more and RSVP here.
Family Puzzle Palooza: Enjoy working on a 520-piece original puzzle around a campfire at the Brookside Gardens Nature Center in Wheaton, Saturday. Work as a team and bring a campfire snack to enjoy with your team. Cost of $40 for a team of up to six for Saturday’s activity from 10 a.m.-noon. Takoma Park Earth Day Celebration: The City of Takoma Park will host a celebration in the Sligo Creek Stream Valley Park, Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Come check out the EV showcase, attend a guided tree walk, and learn about the various environmental involvement opportunities. Snow cones, face painting, art activities and educational materials about sustainability programs will be available for the whole family. Rain date is Sunday, April 21st. Free. Countryside Artisans Spring Tour: The tour offers a unique, self-guided driving tour of artist studios this weekend from April 19-21. Admission is free. The tour occurs rain or shine. Studios are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A list of participating studios with a map may be found on the Countryside Artisans website. Each studio is located within a 30-mile radius of Sugarloaf Mountain.
Rockville Science Day: The Rockville Science Center sponsors the 33rd annual event Sunday, April 21 at Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus from noon to 5 p.m. There will be more than 100 exhibitors offering hands on learning on science and technology-related games, demos and activities. Rocket building and launching, telescope viewing, robots, backyard wildlife, ship models, microscopes, snakes, Civil War medical practice, coding, math, chemical flames and explosions, archaeology and 3-D printing are all featured. Rainbow Bird Workshop: Sandy Spring Museum’s WondeRoom series of inclusive, family-oriented workshops continue on Sunday, April 21 from 1-3 p.m. Master dancer and artist Carla Perlo will lead Sunday’s hands on workshop inspired by the story of the Rainbow Bird. Themes of bravery, adventure, hard work, friendship and love will be explored through writing, drawing, conversation, and creative movement exercises. Appropriate for all ages.
