The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) announced Wednesday its goals of constructing more solar rooftops on government buildings and purchasing more renewable energy sources throughout the region.
In order to meet the area’s 2030 climate goals, a total of 250,000 solar roof tops must be built. To date, 70,000 have been built, including a recently completed solar rooftop project at Seneca Village Apartments in Gaithersburg.
COG Chair Kate Stewart, who sits on the Montgomery County Council, asked a committee to explore ways to get governments throughout the D.C. area to install solar systems on government facilities, including schools.
She also called for “setting a new aggressive goal” for construction of solar rooftops.
Stewart tasked committee members to explore ways that members of all the jurisdictions in COG can agree to purchasie only renewable energy.
