Assisted Living Employee Sentenced to 18 Months for Stealing from Residents

Maritza Ramirez, of Germantown, was sentenced to 18 months in prison Thursday for stealing from vulnerable adults at her place of employment.

Ramirez, 57, she also was ordered to pay $7,500 in restitution to the families of the victims.

On Nov. 19, 2022, the 14-year employee at Marian Assisted Living on Georgia Avenue in Olney pleaded guilty to financial exploitation of vulnerable adults in a scheme.

An investigation began in March of 2022 when one family discovered that their relative had several items of jewelry and a cell phone missing from a secured bedroom at Marian while she underwent surgery.

Montgomery County Police then discovered at least 11 victims and pawn shop records showing that between 2015 and 2022, Ramirez had received at least $7,700 by selling 81 items, including jewelry and designer purses.

Some of the stolen items include a wedding band with inscribed initials, a red Jitterbug phone and gold cufflinks.

“Maritza Ramirez was entrusted with the care of vulnerable adults and violated that trust when she stole their possessions and used the items for her personal financial gain. Multiple items had great sentimental value to the families who were victimized, and those items have not been recovered,” said Lauren DeMarco, spokesperson for the State’s Attorney’s Office.
