The Maryland attorney general’s office released dashboard and body-worn camera footage Tuesday from a fatal police pursuit last December.
The release of the footage was delayed to give investigators more time to review the video and conduct interviews with witnesses, according to a press release from the attorney general.
Shortly after 10 p.m. on Dec. 13, Montgomery County police saw a white Nissan Maxima and attempted a traffic stop near Bucknell Drive and Cambridge Park Court in Wheaton. The suspect struck a marked police car before fleeing, according to the dashboard camera footage.
Officers pursued the Nissan northbound on Georgia Avenue for about 1.5 miles before the Nissan driver struck a median at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Henderson Avenue and lost control. The vehicle entered the southbound lanes of Georgia Avenue and collided with two vehicles — a Toyota Corolla and a Honda Pilot, according to police.
Body-worn camera footage shows officers apprehending the 19-year-old male who drove the Nissan after the crash. Police said he was later taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The passenger in the Nissan, a juvenile male, was pronounced dead on the scene. The car was flipped on its side, its windows shattered and the airbag was deployed, according to body-worn camera footage.
The drivers and one passenger in the other two vehicles that were hit were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. None of the officers were injured, according to police.
