Welcome to our Weekend Roundup of events in Montgomery County. Here are nine things to do this weekend, August 4-6.
FRIDAY, August 4
Sizzlin’ Summer Sidewalk Sale: Find some hidden treasures at The Family Room store in Laytonsville this weekend. Their annual sidewalk sale returns from Friday, Aug. 4 through Sunday, Aug. 6. 6820 Olney Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville.
Full Moon Fridays: Take a hike and enjoy a campfire at Locust Grove Nature Center in Bethesda. Bring hot dogs or food to warm over the fire. Register with ActiveMontgomery; $8 fee.
Family Crab Fridays: Smokey Glen Farm hosts a family barbeque this Friday, Aug. 4, with a little twist. The menu includes steamed crab and shrimp, along with pies, potato salad, and corn on the cob. Attendees will be able to play games such as horseshoes, mini golf, and other yard games. The event will be hosted from 5:30–8:30 p.m. with outdoor seating. Pricing is listed at the link included.
SATURDAY, August 5
Zsudayka Nzinga Terrell: Rockville Artist & Makers Studios present a solo exhibit by Zsudayka Nzinga Terrell, who has made a name for herself as a popular artist in the D.C. area. The opening reception for the exhibit, “The Coming of Middle Age”, will be on Friday, August 4.
The exhibit is a look into how Terrell, a Black mother, sees herself and the world around her. Hosted by Artists & Makers Studios on Parklawn Drive, the exhibit will run for nearly the entire month of August.
Underground Railroad Guided Hike: Learn about the experience of 19th century freedom seekers and Montgomery County residents in a guided hike of the Underground Railroad Experience Trail, Saturday, Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. Hike covers two miles on a natural surface hiking trail. Trail is not ADA accessible or suitable for all strollers. Content appropriate for ages 7 and up; fee charged for ages 6 and up. Limited walk-in availability: tickets sold at the Woodlawn Visitor Center. Purchase tickets in advance with ActiveMontgomery here.
Outdoor Movie: Last week, Whitney Houston; this week, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Woodmont Triangle in Bethesda is hosting its second outdoor movie night of the year. Saturday’s showing is “50 First Dates”, a romantic-comedy film. Beginning at 9 p.m., admission is free, although viewers should expect to bring chairs.
SUNDAY, August 6
Monkeycon: The annual meeting of the Montgomery County Comic and Cosplay Club, Monkeycon will be a showing of some of the best comic collections in the area. The club will be bringing multiple guests to this year’s event, including a YouTube creator with over a million views. Located at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door, or $10 if purchased online beforehand using the code MONKEY.
Under the Sea… In Reality: Lobsters and crabs are a staple of Maryland’s culinary scene, but the Damascus Library is attempting to show people the living creatures. On August 6, from 3–3:45 p.m., the library hosts a live showing of various different sea creatures, including fish, lobsters, and clams. The event is free, but tickets are required and are available at 2:30 p.m.
Kingsley Schoolhouse Tour: Take a step back in time as you tour the 1893 Kingsley Schoolhouse, located within Little Bennett Regional Park. The historic one-room schoolhouse served children in the rural farming community of “Froggy Hollow” from 1893 until 1935. The tour takes place the first Sunday of each month from 1 – 4 p.m., April to October.
