Bethesda Big Train Overpowers Gaithersburg Giants on Opening Day

The Bethesda Big Train started the 2024 Cal Ripken Sr. League on a high note, beating the Gaithersburg Giants 12-3 on opening day at Shirley Povich Field. 

Matthew Westley (Maryland) hit a three-run homer in the first and starter Evan Smith (Virginia Tech) had six strikeouts in four innings to lead the way. Closer Max Martzolf (Florida Atlantic) closed out the win with four strikeouts over two innings of work. 

“We just played baseball. We just said do what you do, stay within yourself, play the game, let the game come to you,” said Sal Colangelo, head coach for the Big Train.

You can watch the game on MCM Channel 21 Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

The Big Train next play the Cropdusters Monday at 7 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field.
