MCPD Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) investigated a fatal collision in Gaithersburg that occurred Jan. 14, around 8:30 a.m., at the intersection of S. Frederick Avenue at S. Westland Drive.
Montgomery County Police, Gaithersburg Police, and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to a reported traffic collision involving a bicyclist and a Potomac Disposal Mack trash collection truck.
The detectives’ investigation revealed the Potomac Disposal truck was making a right-hand turn from westbound S. Westland Drive onto northbound South Frederick Avenue. The bicyclist was riding westerly across the northbound lanes of South Frederick Avenue at the crosswalk when the two collided on S. Frederick Avenue, according to the press release.
The bicyclist was transported to Shady Grove Hospital for life-threatening injuries, but later succumbed to those injuries. The victim was later identified as Zhen Xiu Chen, 61, of Gaithersburg.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the collision. Anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact CRU detectives at 240-773-6620.
