‘Big Read’ Features ‘Homegoing’ Which Explores Black History and Identity

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) has teamed up with the Sandy Spring Museum to host the 2024-25 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) “Big Read.” This year’s program, set to kick off Friday, Sept. 20, will highlight themes of community, history, and identity through 10 months of events across the county. The program centers on Yaa Gyasi’s acclaimed novel Homegoing.

The opening event on Sept. 20 will feature a talk by acclaimed Underground Railroad historian Anthony Cohen. It will also provide a chance to meet partners in the program and artists who will be hosting programs. Attendees also will receive a free copy of Homegoing. The initiative will feature workshops, speaker events, and discussion groups designed to engage residents and celebrate local Black and POC artists. A key event, “JOURNEY(S): A Screening and Discussion with Saaret E. Yoseph,” is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025, at the Gaithersburg Library. This interactive event will offer attendees a chance to explore the novel’s themes in depth.

Programming will take place at MCPL branches, the Sandy Spring Museum, and the Olive Branch Community Church.
