Bostic Named Acting Principal at Wootton High School After Racist Incident

On Tuesday, Thomas S. Wootton High School named Dr. Joseph Bostic as acting principal effective immediately replacing Doug Nelson who was placed on leave following a racist slur being found on a student’s desk at the school last week. The incident was not reported for a few days.

Bostic, who was working as assistant principal and principal intern at Northwood High School, was named Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) 2021-22 Teacher of the Year. He has shared his story about overcaming poverty and homelessness growing up in Georgia.

In a message to the Wootton community Tuesday, Dr. Peter O. Moran, MCPS Chief of Schools wrote:

“Dr. Bostic, a former Teacher of the Year in MCPS, comes to Wootton after having served as an assistant principal and principal intern at Northwood High School, where he demonstrated a strong commitment to high-quality instruction and meeting the academic and social-emotional needs of all students. Prior to Northwood, Dr. Bostic worked at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School as a math specialist and team leader. Dr. Bostic has also served as a Building Our Network of Diversity (BOND) teacher and a football coach at Springbrook and Blake High Schools. During this leadership transition, Dr. Bostic will work closely with the staff and students at Wootton High School and will receive coordinated support from the Office of School Support and Improvement and other central office partners. Dr. Bostic will be attending the PTSA meeting on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 7:00 p.m.”

MCM talked to Bostic after he was honored in 2022:

Earlier this year, MCM’s high school interns interviewed Bostic for the YouthTalks podcast.
