U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks, both Democrats, announced they will vote no on the Republican’s budget continuing resolution.
The continuing resolution allows President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to continue “looting our government to pay for tax cuts for billionaires,” Alsobrooks said.
Van Hollen, during a brief video meeting with Montgomery County state legislators, said the budget as sent to the U.S. Senate from the House of Representatives gives Musk “a slush fund.”
He did not want to see the government shut down and would prefer a 30-day stop gap resolution to work out full year’s budget, he said.
Republicans plan to extend tax breaks for the wealthy as well as large corporations while cutting funds for the needy, according to Van Hollen.
The Trump Administration currently is going after federal workers still on probation and will start firing workers on Schedule F next, Van Hollen said, noting there are between 50,000 and 60,000 merit based employees that will be replaced with “political cronies,” if this happens.
Alsobrooks said the Trump Administration is “[C]onducting a witch hunt against our patriotic civil servants — people who work on behalf of our veterans, people who work on behalf of our students, people who work on behalf of our domestic violence survivors.”
Also on the line are cuts to Social Security benefits and Medicaid, she stated in a news release.
“We have a unique opportunity at this moment to course correct and pass a clean, bipartisan funding bill that would address some of these concerns and mistakes. That is what Marylanders need and deserve in this moment of chaos,” Alsobrooks noted, adding, “Republicans control the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives. Whatever happens next is squarely on them.”
I will be voting ‘No’ on cloture and on the Republican continuing resolution.
A continuing resolution will allow President Trump to continue doing what he’s doing.
