Sorie Mansaray, 20, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Wednesday after being convicted of attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault.
Mansaray, of Boyds, was convicted by a jury on April 18 in connection with a July 12, 2002 shooting in Silver Spring.
He also must serve five years of supervised probation upon release. His other charges include use of a firearm in commission of a crime of violence, possession of a regulated firearm by a person prohibited from having a firearm and possession of a regulated firearm by a person younger than 21.
According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, Mansaray shot at a vehicle that had just pulled onto the 11000 block of New Hampshire Road in Silver Spring. He wounded a passenger in the car, who was treated in a hospital for a gunshot wound. He survived the shooting.
The defendant and victim did not know each other, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office. However, they did encounter one and other at the Dash In gas station prior to the shooting.
When the victim’s vehicle pulled into the parking lot, Mansaray walked up next to a Metro bus stop and fired as the car passed, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office. The incident was captured by surveillance cameras. Also, there was a witness.
“The shooting occurred during daylight hours, along one of our busiest roads in Montgomery County. This sort of reckless violence in our community is unacceptable and we will not tolerate it,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.
According to the witness, the shooter ran to the nearby Enclave Apartments.
Soon after the incident, employees at Adventist Healthcare Medical Center in White Oak alerted police that a shooting victim had been dropped off at their facility.
