A small plane crashed into power lines in Gaithersburg in the Montgomery Village area Sunday around 5:30 p.m. The plane was still caught in the power lines 100 feet up in the air as of 7 p.m. There are believed to be two people on board, a pilot and a passenger. They are “okay” according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Pete Piringer but there is still concern because the power lines are still energized according to Piringer.
Widespread power outages in the area have been reported. Pepco estimates 85,000 are without power.
Rescue crews are on the scene at Goshen Road near Rothbury Drive.
Update at 8:20 p.m. Per Piringer, the small plane was headed towards (landing) Montgomery County Airpark in Gaithersburg. The Airpark is now closed to air traffic
