Bullis Mourns Loss of Football Head Coach Ray Butler

The Bullis community is mourning the loss of head football coach Ray Butler.

According to a Bullis School spokesperson, “Butler passed away peacefully late Monday night surrounded by family.”

Butler, 48, began his tenure at Bullis in dual roles as both a security team member and an assistant football coach. According to a statement from Bullis, “From the outset, it was clear that he was more than just a protector of the campus—he was a mentor and a positive force in the lives of the Bullis students he encountered throughout the day. His ability to connect with young people, combined with his deep knowledge of football, quickly earned him respect and admiration within the school community.”

Butler reportedly suffered two brain hemorrhages last month. A GoFundMe set up to help with medical costs has raised over $60,000.

Butler, who had worked at Bullis for a decade, became head football coach in 2023. According to Bullis, Butler “continued to shape the lives of his players with his calm demeanor, compassion, and unwavering dedication. He committed himself fully to them—in-season or out, rain or shine, win or lose.” The school said counselors will be available to help students cope with their loss.

“RIH (rest in heaven) Coach Ray,” Monique Wilson, mother of Bullis track star and Olympic gold medalist Quincy Wilson, posted on Instagram. The official Bullis School Instagram post she shared spoke about the impact Butler had as a coach. “He was a mentor, coach, and friend to so many of us. We will miss you, Coach.” the School’s Instagram page wrote in the caption.

Assistant coach Skyler Springs, who had been the team’s offensive coordinator, will take over head coaching duties. He is the son of Shawn Springs, former Springbrook High School, Ohio State and NFL star.

Bullis opens their season Sept. 13 at home against Bishop O’Connell.
