Burtonsville Fire Displaces 2; Officials Say Cause Was Accidental

A fire broke out in the attic of a single-family home in Burtonsville, displacing two people, the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service ( MCFRS) said.

Firefighters responded to the 3400 block of Greencastle Road, between Columbia Pike and Old Columbia Pike, Friday afternoon, according to MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer.

When crews arrived, they saw smoke coming from the roof and discovered the fire in the attic.

About 50 firefighters were on the scene, officials said.

Everyone inside the home escaped safely, and no injuries were reported.

In an update Saturday, Piringer said on X that the cause of the fire was accidental.

Investigators believe it was caused by heat from electrical sanders used on the roof, which ignited combustibles inside the wood soffit.

The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damages, according to Piringer.
