Actor Jon Bernthal has garnered high praise for his guest role as Michael “Mikey” Berzatto in The Bear. Now he has the hardware to back it up. On Sunday, Bernthal secured the first Emmy win of his career for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmys.
Bernthal, 47, grew up in Cabin John attending Sidwell Friends School. After completing his studies at Harvard in 2002, Bernthal began his acting career. He appeared in blockbusters throughout the 2000s such as World Trade Center and the second Night at the Museum film. Bernthal then switched over to television, starring in shows like The Walking Dead and The Punisher before landing his award-winning gig on the FX show.
Bernthal earned the first Emmy nomination of his career for the same award last year, losing out to Sam Richardson of Ted Lasso. This year Bernthal beat Matthew Broderick (Only Murders in the Building), Ryan Gosling (Saturday Night Live), Christopher Lloyd (Hacks), and fellow Bear guest stars Bob Odenkirk and Will Poulter.
The trio of men accounted for just three of a record 23 nominations earned by The Bear at this year’s Emmys. That’s the most nominations ever by a comedy series, topping the previous record of 22 set by NBC’s 30 Rock in 2009.
You can watch coverage of the Primetime Emmys ceremony live on ABC Sunday at 8 p.m. as many of Bernthal’s castmates, including his on-screen brother Jeremy Allen White, will look to bring home more gold for the show. All episodes of The Bear, including the season 2 episode “Fishes” that won Bernthal the award, are streaming on Hulu.
